Bairrada Wine and Sparkling Wine
Bairrada is a wine region demarcated in 1979, located between Coimbra and Aveiro, with clay-limestone soils that favour the Baga grape. It produces structured reds, rich in tannins, that age well, as well as white wines and sparkling wines. Bairrada sparkling wine is made by the traditional method, with second fermentation in the bottle, and is recognised for its balanced acidity and fine bubbles. The region has a long winemaking tradition, with producers combining native grapes and modern techniques.
Good to know
- Try the Baga reds, which gain complexity with age, at cellars such as Aliança or Caves São João, in Anadia.
- Bairrada sparkling wines are ideal as an aperitif or to accompany fish and seafood dishes, thanks to their acidity.
- The Bairrada Wine Route allows visits to wineries and estates, with guided tastings, especially during the harvest in September.
- Pair brut sparkling wine with cured cheeses or the reserve red with roasted meats, such as Bairrada suckling pig.
