Cereja do Fundão
Cereja do Fundão is a table cherry with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), mainly cultivated in the municipalities of Fundão, Covilhã, Belmonte and Penamacor. The Cova da Beira region, with granite soils and a transitional climate between Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, provides ideal growing conditions. The most planted varieties include Burlat, Van, Summit and Lapins, harvested between May and July. It is mostly eaten fresh, but also made into jams, liqueurs and spirits.
Good to know
- Best enjoyed fresh as a table fruit, or in conventual pastries such as Fundão cherry tarts.
- Harvest season runs from mid-May to July, with peak in June.
- The Burlat variety is the first to be picked, followed by Van and the later Lapins.
- Pairs well with aged sheep’s cheese from Beira Baixa and sparkling wines from the region.
