Trancoso

Trancoso is a medieval town in the Guarda district, in the Beira Alta region, whose historic centre is still enclosed by a ring of walls roughly one kilometre long. The castle, of medieval origin, overlooks the town and forms part of the line of fortifications along Portugal’s central border. Inside the walls, narrow streets, the old Jewish quarter, the pillory and several 16th-century houses have been preserved. The town is also known for its handicrafts, cheese and the wines of the region.
