Monsanto

Monsanto is a parish in the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, in the Beira Baixa region, built on and among the huge granite boulders of the hill it occupies. Many houses are wedged between the rocks, with stone walls and clay-tile roofs, and narrow streets climb up to the castle and the Chapel of São Miguel. Classified as a Historic Village of Portugal, it preserves Roman, Arab and medieval remains, including stretches of wall and a cistern. The low altitude and dry climate make it a year-round destination, with the Festa de Santa Cruz in May as a highlight.
